When we think about what food to buy we very rarely think how harmful those brightly coloured pre-packaged, canned and processed foods can be, how much damage they can do to our health and our bodies.
Most people have some general understanding about healthy diet – fruit and vegetables are good for us and processed junk food is not. Some people check food labels for sugar and salt content while others are more interested in fat content and calories. We also know that food with a lot of additives is not good for us but we eat it anyway.
Most of us know that eating too much sugary foods may lead to diabetes, having too much salt in your diet may lead to high blood pressure, eating foods with high fat content and calories may lead to obesity and eating food with artificial chemical additives will lead to? What?
When was the last time you locked up the Internet to find out what are the long term health effects of having Sulfur Dioxide (E220) or Sodium Nitrate in your diet? Or any of the other thousands permitted chemical additives?
Here some of the diseases caused just by one additive – Sodium Nitrate: leukemia, heart disease, and ovarian, stomach, esophageal, pancreatic and thyroid cancers.
Our bodies have a built in mechanism of dealing with bad natural food and selecting what is good for us. We would not eat a rotting apple or a smelly decaying fish. Even if we accidentally eat some gone off food it will be quickly eliminated through vomiting and diarrhea without causing any serious and lasting damage to our health.
But we are defenceless against chemically enhanced foods that are not found in nature, chemicals that appeared in our diet only 30-40 years ago – preservatives, taste and flavour enhancers, stabilisers, emulsifiers, artificial colouring, artificial sweeteners.
The most harmful and damaging to our health are foods with artificial chemical additives. Chemical food additives are alien to human bodies.
Human excretory system is not designed to eliminate large quantities of these chemicals. The body does not know what to do with Monosodium Glutamate, Sodium Nitrite, Sodium Benzoate, Sulfur Dioxide.
The damage done to your body by these toxic chemicals is by far greater than eating any amount of traditional, natural foods.
When the body does not know what to do with an alien substance it tries to get it out through the organs of elimination – the gut, the liver and kidneys. If the alien chemical substance cannot be eliminated because of overloaded excretory system (which is true for most people on ‘normal’ diet) these chemicals are stored either in the organs of elimination (the gut, the liver, kidneys) or they enter the blood stream and end up all over the body where they continue to accumulate and remain locked in for decades where they cause damage to everything they come into contact with – tissues and organs which result in multiple chronic and degenerative diseases.
Some of the natural foods – like animal fats may be not as healthy as others but they are natural – the body knows how to digest them, how to move them through the gut and how to excrete them. Our bodies can deal effectively with any natural food – fats, oils, sugars and salt.
Shelf Life or Your Life?
Some of the most toxic and harmful of them are manufactured from genetically modified corn, wheat, soya or maze, mixed with flavour and taste enhancers, artificial colours and sweeteners. These foods are designed to taste super delicious, they are cheap to manufacture, they are heavily promoted, they have extra-long shelf life and can be transported and marketed in any part of the world.
Look at this list of ingredients and try to guess what food it is:
Ingredients: Corn (Maize), Vegetable Oils (Sunflower, Rapeseed, in varying proportions), Wheat Powder (from Milk), Wheat Flour (contains Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Salt, Cheese Powder (from Milk), Buttermilk Powder, Potassium Chloride, Flavour Enhancer (Monosodium Glutamate), Milk Protein, Dextrose, Acids (Lactic Acid, Citric Acid), Colours (Paprika Extract, Annatto, Plain Caramel), Spice, Sugar, Skimmed Milk Powder.
Would you eat this stuff if it were sold as a powder in a plain packet?
Even an innocent looking loaf of bread can contain up to 23 artificial additives.
A lot of people eat foods with additives for decades not knowing what damage they do to their bodies or trusting the food industry and the supermarkets that all food products on sale are safe to eat.
You might hope that farmed meat, chickens and fish are natural and free form additives. Think about the modern farming techniques, about all the antibiotics, growth hormones and other chemicals fed to the animals and added to meat during processing and storage.
You might think you are following a healthy diet, counting calories, avoiding fats, sugars and salt. You might be even a vegan. The truth is that unless you eat homemade food made from natural ingredients you are very likely to eat foods with toxic chemicals which accumulate in the body.
Before you start your journey to a healthy diet try to eliminate completely all foods with chemicals and additives and cut back on processed and refined foods.
If this is going to be the only change you do to you diet it will have a tremendous effect on your long term health and well-being.
