All I want for Christmas is Good Health and Happiness!

As the season of Goodwill is upon us, it can be a tricky time for our mental health.

Can what we eat and drink affect our mental health? Yes, it definitely can.

Our Gut-Brain Connection

Our Gut can communicate with our brains through our nervous system with hormones such as serotonin (happy hormone). Serotonin is produced by special cells in our intestines.

Foods containing tryptophan can increase serotonin production.

Our gut bacteria (microbiome) produce another vital chemical called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), also found in some foods. GABA works to reduce anxiety and improve mood and sleep.

Fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, and soy yoghurt contain GABA and increase gut bacteria.

Hydration is essential for our mental functioning in general. Choose water and herbal teas. Although caffeine acts as a stimulant and can improve cognitive performance, this is temporary, and caffeine has well-known side effects, including increasing heart rate and blood pressure. It can increase anxiety and make it difficult to sleep. Caffeine is also a diuretic (increases the need to urinate more frequently).

Sorry to be a bearer of bad news. Alcohol is terrible for our health; it is a poison and compromises our liver. A healthy liver is essential for Good Health. Alcohol also suppresses Serotonin and GABA production, so it is not supportive of Good Health and Happiness.

Guess what, having a pet is good for your Mental Health, but pets are definitely not just for Christmas!

Merry Christmas if you celebrate; if not, have an excellent December and a Happy New Year.
